Synopsis
L’extrait d’un rapport du Military Intelligence Service, emprunté à l’ouvrage de Haruki Murakami Kafka on the shore, sert de point de départ à ce film. Dans ce rapport, intitulé Rice Bowl Hill Incident, une institutrice japonaise raconte un évènement inexpliquable, proche du surnaturel, survenu aux enfants de sa classe lors d’une sortie en montagne. Dans la première séquence, cet évènement est reconstitué en décor naturel d’après les descriptions fournies dans le rapport. La deuxième séquence est constituée du récit de la jeune femme. Filmée dans une salle de classe, elle rapporte l’incident face à un mystérieux enquêteur.
A group of children mysteriously falls asleep during a class field trip in the Japanese countryside. The teacher who accompanied them will later be interrogated by the American secret services concerning their disappearance. The film is composed of two distinct but intensely connected narratives. Inspired by part of Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore, it shares the same desire to combine a quasi-documentary aesthetic with supernatural themes. These elements - such as the cat character, a kind of poetic catalyst, recurrent in Murakami's work, lend surrealistic leanings to Rice Bowl Hill Incident.
